Rattan Wicker Wall Sconce

A small woven rattan wall light, 20 cm wide and only 10 cm high, sitting close against the wall. Wall sconces in natural fibre are unusual, and the reason to want one is what the weave does at close range: light passes through the gaps and casts a fine pattern across the wall on both sides, which a solid shade cannot do.

At this size it belongs where a large fitting would be wrong. Mounted either side of a bed it replaces a pair of table lamps and frees the whole surface of a nightstand. Along a hallway in a run of three it gives a corridor rhythm without taking up any floor space. Above a reading chair, beside a mirror or in an alcove it puts warm light exactly where it is needed. Two versions are offered: hardwired for a permanent installation, or plug-in with a cable and switch, which is the easier option in a rented flat or where there is no wall wiring in place.

Rattan is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between pieces. Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended, and a bulb that runs cool should be used and kept clear of the weave. Mount securely into a suitable wall fixing, and have hardwired installation carried out by a qualified electrician.
