A simple, effective way to get a room ready for Halloween without committing to anything permanent. Small moulded bats are threaded along a fine wire, each one lit from inside by a purple LED, so the string reads as a line of glowing silhouettes rather than a row of ordinary fairy lights. The purple is deep enough to feel properly eerie once the main lights are off.
Three lengths are available: 3 m with 20 LEDs for a mantelpiece, a mirror or a doorway; 6 m with 40 LEDs for a bannister or a window; and 10 m with 80 LEDs when you want to run the whole length of a hallway or a porch. All three are battery operated, which means no trailing cable and no socket to find, and they can be moved around the house or packed away in minutes. Loop them along a shelf, wrap them round a bannister rail, or hang them behind a sheer curtain for a diffused glow.
