Wood Pine Cone Pendant Lampshade

Overlapping wooden scales built up into a pine cone, each one set slightly proud of the one below it. Assembling a shade this way is slow, repetitive work, and the result is a form that no moulding process can imitate: the scales cast small shadows on each other, so the surface has texture and depth in daylight as well as when lit.

Three sizes are offered, and all three keep the height close to the width so the cone stays properly proportioned. At 25 by 26 cm it works over a bedside, a hallway or a breakfast bar, and a group of three at staggered drops is where it looks best. At 40 by 43 cm it is the everyday choice over a dining table or a kitchen island. At 50 by 50 cm it has real presence and becomes the focal point of a living or dining room. Light escapes between every scale, so the cone glows along its whole surface and throws a fine overlapping pattern onto the ceiling.

Wood is a natural material, so grain and tone vary between scales and between pieces, and no two shades are identical. Bulbs are not included; long-lasting low-wattage LED or Edison-style bulbs are recommended, and a bulb that runs cool should be used and kept clear of the timber. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
