Wabi-sabi as a style is about accepting the marks a handmade object carries, and this pendant is a fair example of it. The lantern shade is woven from rattan and jute rope, and the coil is deliberately uneven: the rope thickness shifts along its length, the weave tightens and loosens, and the finished shape is never perfectly round. Those irregularities are the reason to buy it rather than a fault to check for.
Hung over a dining table, the coiled rope casts horizontal bands of shadow onto the ceiling and drops a warm, contained pool of light onto the table below. The fibre reads as sand-coloured under a warm bulb and greyer under a cool one, so a 2700K LED is worth the effort. It sits well against exposed timber, plaster walls, ceramic tableware and mid-century or rustic furniture.
Two sizes are offered: 40 x 23 cm for a table for four or a kitchen island, and 50 x 23 cm for a longer table or a room with higher ceilings. It takes a standard E27 bulb, runs on 110V-240V and is CE and UL certified; the bulb itself is not included. Direct wired only. Indoor use, and keep the rope out of damp rooms so it does not soften or discolour.
