Solid Wood Whale Pendant Light

A whale cut and shaped from solid wood, hung horizontally so it appears to be swimming across the ceiling. The form is simplified to a clean silhouette rather than carved in detail, which is what allows it to work in a family living room or a dining room as well as in a child's bedroom.

Two sizes are offered. At 55 by 45 cm it suits a child's bedroom, a nursery or a smaller dining table. At 80 by 59 cm it is a substantial piece and becomes the focal point of a playroom, a family living room or a large dining space. Both are available hardwired for a permanent installation or as a plug-in with a cable and in-line switch, which is the easier option in a rented flat or where you may want to move the fitting to another room as a child grows. Solid wood rather than a printed or moulded finish is what makes it last: it can be dusted, it does not chip, and it ages well.

Wood is a natural material, so grain and tone vary between pieces and no two whales are identical. This is a light fitting, not a toy: mount it securely out of reach in a child's room, and set the drop so it cannot be reached from a bed. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool and keep it clear of the timber.
