There is nothing clever about this shade, and that is the case for it. A hand-woven rattan cone with an open base: the same shape old-fashioned kitchen lamps had before lighting became a design category. It carries the nostalgia of those fixtures without their fragility, and it does not ask anything of the room around it. In a kitchen or a dining room that already has a lot going on, that restraint is worth more than another statement piece.
The weave is traditional and worked by hand, one strand at a time, which is slower than any machine method and shows in the finished surface. Light drops cleanly through the open base and escapes through the weave in a soft, even halo, so the table below is well lit and the rest of the room stays warm rather than dim. It makes full use of the space it occupies without dominating the ceiling.
Three sizes are offered, 40, 50 and 60 cm. Match the diameter to about half the width of the table beneath it, and hang the base around 75 cm above the surface. Bulb not included; a warm white LED brings out the straw tone of the rattan. Indoor use only, and keep it away from steam and damp. Dust with a dry soft brush.
