Seagrass Fringe Pendant Light

Natural seagrass, handspun into a fringe and left to dry in the sun rather than kiln-dried or bleached. Sun-drying is slower and it is what gives the fibre its uneven, softly variegated colour: the tone shifts subtly across the shade in a way that a treated material never does.

The fringe is the design. Rather than a woven shell, the seagrass hangs loose, so the shade has movement and a soft edge, and light escapes between the strands in fine vertical lines rather than through a regular weave. That gives a warmer, more diffuse result than a rigid natural shade, and it makes the fitting sit comfortably in a coastal room, a bedroom or a relaxed living space. The colour is genuinely neutral, so it works against white plaster, linen, pale timber and terracotta without needing anything else in the room to support it.

Seagrass is a natural material dried in the sun, so colour, texture and the fall of the fringe vary between pieces and no two shades are identical. The fringe may settle after hanging. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool, keep it clear of the fibre and do not fit a high-wattage bulb in a natural-fibre shade. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
