Sapphire Cove Blue Rattan Pendant

Blue and natural rattan together is a coastal formula that works because the two do different jobs. The blue supplies colour without a painted surface; the rattan supplies texture without a pattern. Combined in one shade they read as calm rather than as decoration, which is why the pairing turns up so consistently in beach houses and why it also works well a long way inland.

The weave is a classic wicker, worked by hand, so the surface has the slight irregularities that separate it from a moulded shade. Light passes through the gaps and picks up the colour on its way out, so the wash on the ceiling and the nearest wall is faintly tinted rather than neutral. Under a warm bulb the blue stays soft; under a cool white it goes hard and can look grey.

Three sizes are offered, 40, 50 and 60 cm. The 40 cm suits a hallway or a bedside; the 50 cm is the standard size over a table for four; the 60 cm anchors a living room or a wide island on its own. Bulb not included. Indoor use only, since rattan swells in damp air, and dust with a dry soft brush rather than a wet cloth.
