Rope instead of reed. Hemp is thicker and softer than rattan, so the coils that make up this shade are chunky and slightly irregular, and the whole fixture reads as heavier and more rustic than a finely woven one. That weight is the appeal: in a room of light materials it gives you something with visible substance overhead, and the retro shape keeps it from feeling like a craft project.
Because the rope is wound tightly, most of the light is pushed down through the open base rather than escaping through the sides. The result is a warm, well-defined pool on the table below and only a narrow band of light along the coils themselves, which glow rather than shine. Under a warm bulb the hemp goes a deep sand colour that suits timber and leather.
Two sizes are offered, 45 x 30 cm and 55 x 35 cm. The smaller works over a breakfast bar or in a hallway; the larger anchors a dining table. Bulb not included; use a warm white LED. Indoor use only, since hemp rope absorbs moisture and will slacken in damp air. Dust it with a dry soft brush and never wipe it with a wet cloth.
