Rattan Lantern Wall Sconce

A woven rattan lantern mounted to the wall, 20 cm wide and 14 cm high. Taking the lantern shape and turning it into a wall fitting is a sensible piece of design: you get the woven form and the pattern it casts without the drop of a pendant, which means it works in places where nothing can hang.

Those places are the point. A narrow hallway, a stairwell wall, the space beside a bed, the run above a sideboard, an alcove: all of them need light and none of them can take a hanging fitting. The weave lets light through the sides as well as the front, so the wall behind and around the sconce picks up the pattern and the fitting lights a wide area softly rather than throwing a hard spot. Two versions are offered: hardwired for a permanent installation, or plug-in with a cable and switch for a rented flat or where there is no wall wiring.

Rattan is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between pieces and no two are identical. Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended, and a bulb that runs cool should be used and kept clear of the weave. Mount securely into a suitable wall fixing, and have hardwired installation carried out by a qualified electrician.
