Wabi-Sabi Rattan Chandelier

A delicately handwoven rattan shade on a fine hairwire-style suspension, drawing on Japanese retro aesthetics and the wabi-sabi principle that an imperfect, handmade object is worth more than a flawless machined one. The weave is finer than most rattan pendants, which is what gives it refinement rather than rusticity.

The suspension matters as much as the shade. A hairwire drop is almost invisible, so the shade appears to float rather than hang from a visible cord, and the eye goes straight to the weave. Three sizes are offered: 40 by 28 cm for a bedside, a hallway or a smaller dining table; 50 by 35 cm as the everyday choice over a dining table or a kitchen island; and 60 by 38 cm where the fitting needs to hold a large table or a living room on its own. Each size is available with the hairwire suspension or as a plug-in with a cable and switch.

Rattan is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between pieces and no two shades are identical. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool, keep it clear of the weave and do not fit a high-wattage bulb in a natural-fibre shade. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
