A cylindrical lantern in cross-woven bamboo, made for outside. Most woven shades cannot go anywhere near weather; this one is treated to handle it, which makes it one of the few ways to get the texture of natural fibre onto a covered terrace, a porch or a balcony without it warping within a season. The cylinder shape helps too, since it sheds water rather than collecting it.
The cross-weave is tighter and more regular than a basket weave, which gives the lantern a sharp, contemporary edge the material on its own would not have. Two mesh colours are offered: black, which reads as a graphic outline against a pale wall or a bright sky, and white, which all but disappears by day and glows evenly at night. Both are stained rather than painted, so the grain of the bamboo stays visible.
Available hardwired or plug-in. Hang it over an outdoor dining table, along a covered walkway, or in a row across a porch ceiling. It works indoors too, in a kitchen or a bathroom where an untreated shade would not last. Bulb not included; use a warm white LED. Keep it under cover rather than in direct driving rain, and brush dust off dry.
