Thin slices of wood wrapped over a metal frame in overlapping scales, forming a chevron pattern across the whole surface of a wide shade. Building a shade this way is slow work, and it shows: the pattern runs continuously around the piece with no seam, and every scale catches light along its edge.
The shade fully encases a single bulb, which is the practical part of the design. Because the source is hidden inside the wooden shell, there is no glare from any angle, and what escapes between the scales is a fine pattern of warm light rather than a bright pool. That makes it a better choice over a dining table than a fitting with an exposed bulb, and it gives the piece real presence in a room even before you switch it on. Hung low over a table the chevron pattern sits near eye level, which is where the craft in it can actually be seen.
Wood is a natural material, so grain and tone vary between scales and between pieces, and no two shades are identical. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool, keep it clear of the timber and do not fit a high-wattage bulb. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the ceiling fixing must be rated for the weight of the fitting.
