A straight-sided drum in woven rattan, made by hand in Bali. The drum is the least fussy shape in woven lighting: no taper, no dome, no decorative rim, just a cylinder of weave that sits level over whatever is beneath it. That makes it the safest choice over a kitchen island, where a tapered shade can look off-balance against a rectangular worktop.
Because the sides are vertical and the base is open, the light falls in a column rather than a cone, so the pool it puts on a worktop has clean edges and stays roughly the same width as the shade itself. Two or three in a row over a long island give you an even run of light instead of a series of overlapping circles. The weave still lets enough through the sides to keep the ceiling from going dark.
It suits coastal and beach-house interiors, and it holds up in a covered patio restaurant setting where the material reads as part of the decor rather than as a fixture. Interior designers use it in kitchens and dining rooms for that reason. Bulb not included; a warm white LED brings out the honey in the rattan.
