The shade is the reason to choose this one. Instead of the flat glass diffuser almost every fan uses, it carries a ribbed wooden dome in a pumpkin profile, with the ribs running vertically so the light escapes between them. It changes the fixture from an appliance with a lamp in it into something closer to a pendant with a fan attached.
Wood diffuses light in a way glass cannot. What comes through the gaps between the ribs is warm and broken rather than flat and even, and the shade itself glows along each rib. In a room used mainly in the evening, that is a considerably more comfortable quality of light than a frosted panel gives, and it is the reason to pay the difference.
Three spans are offered, 106, 122 and 147 cm, which is 42, 48 and 58 inches, and all three include a remote. Match the span to the room: 42 for a bedroom, 48 for a living room, 58 for a large or open-plan space.
