Cane Webbing Screen Chandelier

A series of irregular hand-finished cane panels arranged as overlapping screens rather than wrapped into a single shade. The irregularity is deliberate and it is what gives the piece its architecture: the panels sit at different depths and angles, so light passes through some and is blocked by others, and the shadow pattern is layered rather than flat.

Cane webbing is a fine, regular weave, and using it in broad flat panels rather than a curved shade is what makes this read as modern rather than rustic. Two sizes are offered, at 68 by 45 cm and 80 by 45 cm, and both are wide relative to their depth, so they spread light generously over a dining table or a living room while staying clear of sightlines. Hung over a table the layered panels sit near eye level, which is where the interplay between them can actually be seen, and the natural cane warms a room that has too much hard surface in it.

Cane is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between panels and between pieces, and it may mellow with age and light. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool, keep it clear of the cane and do not fit a high-wattage bulb. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the ceiling fixing must be rated for the weight and span of the fitting.
