Large White Fabric Chandelier

A pure white fabric shade in four sizes, from 30 cm up to 60 cm. There is nothing decorative about it, and that is the whole proposition: a clean white drum is the most useful shade there is, because it works in any room, with any scheme, and never dates.

White fabric is also the most efficient choice optically. It reflects the maximum amount of light back down while diffusing what passes through the sides, so with the right bulb one of these can light an entire room evenly, which very few decorative fittings actually manage. Size follows the job: 30 cm over a bedside, a hallway or a desk; 40 cm over a smaller dining table or in a bedroom; 50 cm over a dining table or in a mid-sized living room; and 60 cm where the fitting needs to hold a large room, a wide seating group or a long table on its own. Hung above a dining, working or seating area it is functional first and atmospheric second, which is the right order for a main light.

Bulb is not included; the light output depends entirely on the bulb chosen, so match it to the size of the room. Keep fabric shades clear of heat and use a bulb that runs cool. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the ceiling fixing must be rated for the weight of the fitting.
