Rectangular Bamboo Wall Sconce

A plain rectangular bamboo panel mounted flush to the wall, 20 cm wide and 35 cm high. The rectangle is the whole design: there is no curve, no ornament and no visible hardware, and the piece works entirely on proportion and on the grain of the material.

The vertical proportion is what makes it useful. A tall narrow sconce washes light up and down a section of wall rather than throwing a circle at one height, which is exactly right for a hallway, where the effect makes a corridor feel taller and less enclosed. Mounted either side of a bed it acts as a reading light and frees the nightstand; in a living room above a sofa or beside a doorway it puts light on the wall rather than into the room. Because it sits flush and projects very little, it can go in a narrow passage where anything protruding would be caught by a shoulder.

Bamboo is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between pieces. Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended, and a bulb that runs cool should be used and kept clear of the panel. Mount securely into a suitable wall fixing. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
