Solid Wood and Brass 5-Light Chandelier
Solid wood, antique brass and textured fabric shades in a five-light chandelier, which is three materials doing three different jobs. The wood gives the frame its warmth and weight, the antique brass supplies the detail and the period reference, and the fabric shades soften everything the light touches.
Five lights is the most useful count there is for a domestic chandelier. It is enough to light a dining table evenly from end to end without the hot spot a single central fitting always leaves, and few enough that the piece stays in proportion in a room with a normal ceiling. Fabric shades are the reason it is comfortable to sit beneath: each one diffuses its own bulb, so there is no glare from any angle and the light falls softly across the table and the faces around it. It suits a dining room above all, but works equally in a living room or a large bedroom, and it sits as well in an older house with timber and panelling as in a plain modern room needing warmth.
Wood and fabric are natural materials, so grain, tone and weave vary between pieces. Bulbs are not included. Keep fabric shades clear of heat and use bulbs that run cool. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the ceiling fixing must be rated for the full weight of the chandelier.
