Mid-Century Wooden Ceiling Light, 45cm

Solid wood in a shallow disc, 45 cm across and only 15 cm deep, with the grain left visible and nothing else added. It is about as restrained as a light fitting gets, and the quality of the timber and the precision of the machining are the only things carrying it, which means both have to be good.

Two woods are offered and they behave very differently in a room. White ash is pale, fine-grained and quiet, and it disappears against a white ceiling in a Scandinavian or minimalist scheme. Black walnut is darker, richer and much more present, and it holds its own against strong colours, dark cabinetry and older timber. At 15 cm deep the fitting clears head height comfortably, so it works in a kitchen, a home office, a bedroom or a dining room with a standard ceiling. Both finishes are available hardwired for a permanent installation or as a plug-in with a cable and in-line switch.

Wood is a natural material, so grain and tone vary between pieces and no two fittings are identical. Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended, and a bulb that runs cool should be used. Hardwired installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
