The tiers are the design: each step catches the light along its edge, so the shade shows three distinct bands of brightness rather than a single flat glow.
Amber and chrome is an unusual pairing and a good one. Chrome is cold, precise and reflective; amber glass is warm and slightly irregular, and the two together stop the fitting from being either clinical or twee. Because it sits flush there is no drop, so it works in a hallway, a landing, a bedroom or a kitchen with a normal or low ceiling where a tiered pendant of this character would be impossible. The amber warms whatever bulb is fitted, so even a neutral LED reads golden through the glass, which makes it a comfortable fitting to walk under and look up at.
Glass is formed and tinted individually, so slight variation in tone and thickness between pieces is normal. Bulb is not included. Intended for indoor use in dry locations only.
