White Paper Shade Floor Lamp

A wide white paper shade, 53 cm across, on a floor lamp standing 123 cm high. Paper is the quietest material there is for a lampshade: it diffuses light more evenly than fabric and far more softly than glass, and it turns the whole shade into a single glowing surface with no bright point anywhere on it.

The height is deliberately modest. At 123 cm this sits lower than a typical standard lamp, which puts the light at the level of a sofa arm or a bedside rather than above head height, and gives a room a low pool of soft light for the evening instead of a bright wash from above. That makes it a bedside lamp that needs no table, a reading light beside an armchair, or a corner light in a living room. The wide shade relative to the height gives it a calm, grounded proportion that suits Nordic and minimalist rooms particularly well.

Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended. Paper is combustible: use only a bulb that runs cool, never exceed the stated maximum wattage, and keep the shade clear of curtains, heaters and other heat sources. Stand the lamp on a level, firm surface where it cannot be knocked over, and route the cable clear of walkways.
