The mushroom shape has become the default for a bedside lamp for a practical reason rather than a fashionable one. The domed cap sits over the source and pushes everything downward, so the light lands on the table and the book rather than in the eyes of whoever is lying next to it. It is the least antisocial lamp shape there is, and it took a long time to become common.
The light is warm rather than neutral, which matters more at a bedside than anywhere else in a house. A cool LED beside a bed reads as an office at eleven at night; a warm one reads as a lamp. It is bright enough to read by comfortably and soft enough to leave on while someone else is trying to sleep.
