Classic Wicker Weave Rattan Pendant

This is rattan doing the thing rattan does best: a classic wicker weave, no dye, no decorative top, no unusual silhouette. The appeal is that it fits almost anywhere. A shade with a strong shape commits a room to a style; a plain wicker one adapts to whatever is already there, which is why it turns up in coastal, farmhouse, boho and plainly modern kitchens alike.

It is designed with a kitchen island in mind, and it is worth taking that literally. Hung on its own over a small island it is understated to the point of quiet; hung as a group of two or three at the same height it becomes a proper arrangement, and the repeated weave reads as deliberate rather than incidental. That is the arrangement most people photograph, and the one this shade is proportioned for.

The weave is worked by hand, so no two are identical and the surface has a slight unevenness a moulded shade never gets. Light drops through the open base onto the worktop and filters out through the sides into a warm ambient wash. Bulb not included; use a warm white LED. Indoor use only, and keep it clear of steam directly below. Dust with a dry soft brush.
