Flying Saucer Metal Pendant Light

A wide, low metal disc with a slight dome, the flying saucer shape reduced to its simplest possible form. There is no detailing at all, and the fitting works entirely on proportion: broad enough to spread light across a surface, shallow enough that it never intrudes on a sightline across a room.

Three diameters and five colours make this one of the easier fittings to place. At 25 cm it is an accent, and a row of three or five over a kitchen island is how it is most often used. At 35 cm it works over a breakfast table or in a pair over an island. At 45 cm it is the single fitting over a dining table. White disappears into a pale ceiling; grey and dark grey are quieter industrial choices; green and orange are the confident ones, and because the shade is plain they read as one clean block of colour rather than as decoration. Mixing two colours from the range in a single row is a straightforward way to make a kitchen look considered.

Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended. Because the shade is open at the bottom, a frosted bulb is more comfortable to sit beneath than a clear one. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the ceiling fixing must be rated for the weight of the fitting.
