Floppy Hat Woven Bamboo Pendant

A woven bamboo shade, 55 cm across and only 21 cm deep, with the soft irregular brim of a floppy sun hat rather than the rigid edge of a conventional dome. That looseness is the character of the piece: the rim dips and rises slightly rather than sitting perfectly level, which is what a handmade woven shade should do.

The proportion is unusually practical for something this relaxed. At 55 cm wide it covers a full dining table or a kitchen island, and at 21 cm deep it stays completely clear of sightlines across a room with a standard ceiling, which is the failing of most large woven shades. Light escapes through the weave around the whole brim as well as down through the mouth, so the shade glows at its edge and casts a broad, soft pattern onto the ceiling. Bamboo is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between pieces and no two shades are identical. Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended, and a bulb that runs cool should be used and kept clear of the weave. Hardwired installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
