What separates this from most decorative pendants is output. Because the glass is the whole shade, the difference between them is as much about how much light escapes as about proportion: a larger shade holds more of the bulb and spreads it further. Match the shape to the surface below and the room will be lit properly.
It also works in the places a fixture is chosen for looks rather than function: over a bedside table, at the end of a hallway, or in the corner of a living room, where it is likely to end up the main attraction in the room.
