Double Layer Hemp Rope Pendant Light

Two layers of coiled hemp rope in an umbrella profile, the outer layer wider than the inner one, so the shade has depth and a stepped edge rather than a single flat rim. Hemp is a coarse fibre and that is the appeal: the rope holds its coil visibly, the surface is textured rather than smooth, and it reads as something made rather than moulded.

Two sizes are offered. At 50 by 23 cm it suits a breakfast bar, a bedroom or a smaller dining table, and works well in a pair or a row. At 60 by 28 cm it has the spread for a full dining table or a kitchen island. In both, the double layer means light escapes between the tiers as well as through the mouth, so a warm band appears around the shade when it is lit rather than just a pool below it. Each size is available hardwired for a permanent installation or as a plug-in with a cable and in-line switch, which suits renters and anyone who moves things around.

Hemp is a natural fibre, so colour and texture vary along each rope and between pieces. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool, keep it clear of the rope and do not fit a high-wattage bulb. Hardwired installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the ceiling fixing must be rated for the weight of the fitting.
