Japanese Wood and Fabric Desk Lamp

Wood, metal and fabric in one lamp, which is more materials than a minimalist design usually allows, and the reason this one reads as Japanese rather than Scandinavian. Japanese design tends to combine natural materials rather than reduce everything to a single one, and a fabric shade over a timber base with metal detailing is a direct expression of that.

Two timbers are offered at the same price and they behave quite differently in a room. Sandalwood is the paler and warmer of the two, close to a honey tone, and it keeps the lamp quiet against pale walls. Walnut is darker and more strongly grained, so the base becomes a visible element in its own right rather than just a support for the shade.

At 36 x 53 cm it is proportioned for a bedside, a console or a desk, and the fabric shade diffuses evenly with no glare, which is what makes it usable as a reading light rather than only as ambience. Bulbs are not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs of 60 W or less are recommended. Indoor use. Lint-roll the shade and wipe the wood dry, never with anything damp.
