Rattan Caning Bedside Wall Lamp

A woven caning screen mounted to the wall, hanging like a small mobile rather than sitting rigidly against it. The light passes through the cane rather than around it, so what reaches the room is already broken into a fine regular grid, and the wall behind carries the same pattern. It is a quiet effect, and it is the entire point of the piece.

Caning has been in and out of fashion for a century and is currently everywhere, largely because it does something no printed pattern can: it is a real material with real depth, and it ages rather than dating. This lamp puts it exactly where it works hardest, at bedside height, where the light is low and close and the texture is at eye level. Mounted either side of a bed it replaces a pair of table lamps and frees the surface of a nightstand, and it works just as well in a hallway, above a reading chair or as a pair flanking a mirror or a doorway.

Cane is a natural material, so colour and weave vary between pieces and may mellow with age and light. Bulb is not included; use a bulb that runs cool and keep it clear of the cane, and do not fit a high-wattage bulb. Mount securely into a suitable wall fixing, and have installation carried out by a qualified electrician.
