The surface is not decorative. This globe is 3D printed from real lunar topography data, so the craters, ridges and maria on it correspond to places on the actual Moon rather than to a texture someone designed by eye. Lit from within, those raised and recessed areas shade differently, which is why it reads as a moon rather than as a patterned ball, and why it holds up to being looked at closely.
It is printed in PLA, a biodegradable plastic made from plant starch rather than petroleum, which is unusual in lighting and worth knowing if that matters to you. The material is also very light, so even the 50 cm version puts little load on a ceiling fixing, and it can be made in sizes that would be impractical in glass.
Seven diameters are offered, from 20 cm to 50 cm, each hardwired or plug-in at the same price. The smaller sizes suit a bedside or a child's room; the larger ones work as a single feature in a living room or a stairwell. Bulb not included; a warm white LED gives the most convincing moonlight.
