A plain glass sphere, 15 or 20 cm across, in blue, grey, red or amber. There is nothing else to it, and that is exactly why it works in so many rooms: a coloured glass ball is one of the few fixtures that reads as decorative without also reading as a style commitment. The two sizes behave differently. At 15 cm the sphere is small enough to hang in a group of three or five at staggered heights over a table or down a stairwell, which is how these are usually used. Colour decides the mood. Amber is the warmest and the most forgiving; grey is the most restrained; blue and red are genuine colour statements and best used sparingly, or in a child's room where a bit of colour is the point.
