Black and brown rattan woven together in a herringbone, so the shade carries two tones and a strong diagonal rhythm rather than a single flat colour. The brown keeps it from going severe; the black gives it enough weight to hold a large kitchen island on its own, which a natural shade of the same size often cannot. It is a fixture that reads as deliberate from across a room.
The herringbone matters more at this scale than it would on a small shade. On a 60 cm diameter there is enough surface for the pattern to develop and repeat, so instead of texture you see structure. At night, the light coming through the diagonals throws a corresponding zigzag across the ceiling, which is a more interesting shadow than a plain weave produces.
