A handwoven rattan shade in black, but with the weave worked into a visible repeating pattern rather than left plain. The dark finish makes that pattern legible in a way it never is on natural fibre: where a pale weave reads as a single texture from more than a metre away, a black one shows every crossing as a distinct line. That is what gives the fixture its vintage character, rather than any applied detail.
The effect carries into the evening. Because the shade absorbs rather than reflects, the light that gets out has to come through the gaps in the pattern, so the ceiling and walls pick up a crisp repeating shadow instead of a soft halo. It makes for a darker, more atmospheric room than a natural rattan shade gives, which suits a dining space used mainly at night.
Three sizes are offered, 40 x 35 cm, 50 x 45 cm and 60 x 55 cm, all fairly deep for their diameter. Use the largest only where the ceiling allows it to hang properly. Bulb not included; a warm white LED keeps the black from turning cold. Indoor use only, and dust with a dry soft brush, which a black finish will need more often than a natural one.
