Tall Bamboo Column Pendant Light

Narrow and tall rather than wide and shallow, this woven bamboo shade measures 23 cm across and 58 cm deep, which gives it a column-like presence quite unlike the usual dome. The proportion is the point: it draws the eye down, fills vertical space that would otherwise be empty, and keeps its footprint small enough to hang where a wide pendant would be in the way.

That makes it a particularly good answer to two awkward spaces. Over a kitchen island, a row of two or three columns lights the full length without blocking the view across the room. In a stairwell or a double-height hallway, a single one hung low fills the void properly. The open weave throws long vertical shadows up the walls when it is lit, which exaggerates the height of the room. Bamboo is a natural material, so colour, grain and weave vary between pieces. Bulb is not included; energy-saving LED or incandescent bulbs are suitable and should not exceed 60 W. Use bulbs that run cool and keep them clear of the weave. Hardwired installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
