Bamboo Fish Trap Floor Lamp

The shape is taken directly from a traditional woven fish trap, with the wide belly and the narrowing neck kept exactly as they are in the original tool. Standing 83 cm high and 40 cm wide, it is a low floor lamp rather than a tall one, which means it sits at the level of a sofa arm or a side table and lights a corner from below rather than from above.

That low, glowing pool of light is what it is for. Placed beside an armchair, at the end of a sofa, in the corner of a bedroom or beside a dining sideboard, it gives a room a second, softer light source for the evening, when a ceiling light is too much. The open weave lets light out through the whole body of the lamp, so it reads as a lit object in its own right and casts a broad pattern of woven shadow across the floor and the nearest wall. In an oriental, rustic or coastal room it is entirely at home; in a plain modern one it does the job of a sculpture that happens to work.

Bamboo is natural, so colour, grain and weave vary. Bulb is not included; use an energy-saving LED or incandescent bulb of 60 W or less that runs cool, kept clear of the weave. Stand the lamp on a level surface where it cannot be knocked over, and route the cable clear of walkways.
